If you own an iPhone, you can now practice your Punjabi on-the-go with Ravi Foundation’s iPhone App.
What’s even better, is that 100% of all proceeds from the App go towards supporting children’s education!
Technology built for a cause
PunjabiKosh is a mobile Punjabi-English and English-Punjabi dictionary. The authors claim that it is also the first ever Punjabi-English Dictionary for the iPhone/iPod touch platforms. The App is available for download from within the iTunes AppStore for $6.99. All proceeds from PunjabiKosh go towards supporting education for underprivileged children.
While the app seems to be targeted towards an expat Punjabi population outside India and Pakistan, it looks easy enough for anyone to use on their travels through Punjab. The app can be used to translate words and phrases to English, reverse search from English to Punjabi, and (per the authors) to find out the meaning of Punjabi songs!
About Ravi Foundation
Launched in April 2010, the Ravi foundation is an attempt by its 3 student authors, Sahej Suri, Kulpreet Chilana, and Gurbani Suri to give back to their communities.
Their cause: Providing financial aid to schools that need it the most. Especially schools for the disabled.
The founders were looking for ways in which they could use their talents to raise money and awareness for causes. The answer lied in combining their iPhone application development skills, with fund-raising for a cause. They setup the Ravi Foundation in order to disburse proceeds from iPhone application sales towards causes linked with education.
Since its inception the foundation has been making financial contributions to support the work of The Association for the Welfare of the Handicapped a non-profit that operates a school for underprivileged and disabled kids in Haryana, India. Their goal is to raise a total of $4000 for the education of disabled children.
[Update: We found out via Kulpreet that the App has managed to raise US$ 3500 already, within 6 months of its release. Well done guys!]
